Are you ready for a quick trip abroad without leaving Rome? That’s what the Vatican is a foreign state, and one of the smallest in the world, too. Of course that hasn’t stopped them from amassing one of the most impressive art collections in history over the last five centuries (and still growing). In fact, if you spent 30 seconds on each work of art they have in there, it would take you 7 years to get out of the Vatican Museums.
Don’t worry though, that’s where I come in! In this tour, we’ll focus on the classical art collection, that Michelangelo knew and studied: the perfect introduction to the magnificent Sistine Chapel, with its 600 sq mt frescoed ceiling and the breathtaking Last Judgement. In addition to its artistic value, this is also the place where the Conclave elects a new Pope. We’ll then stop by the Gallery of Tapestries, examine the painted topographical maps and discover more on our way to the St Peter’s Basilica, with Michelangelo’s Pieta and Bernini’s baroque masterpieces.
The tour does not include a visit to the dome of St Peter’s, as it requires a separate ticket which can’t be booked in advance, and visiting hours are limited. However you have the option of going up yourself at the end of the tour; just let me know in advance and I’ll plan our visit accordingly.

The extended Vatican tour is an even more in-depth exploration of one of the most impressive art collections in the world, located in the foreign state – and yet nestled in the centre of Rome – of the Vatican. We’ll start with a comprehensive tour of the Classical Art sections, before moving on to the Raphael Rooms (the ancient papal apartment decorated by Raphael and his school) or the Pinacoteca (art gallery with works by Raphael, Leonardo and Caravaggio). Of course we’ll see and learn about the Sistine Chapel, with its 600 sq mt frescoed ceiling and the breathtaking Last Judgement by Michelangelo. In addition to its artistic value, this is also the place where the Conclave elects a new Pope. The Ancient Rome tour covers the entire archaeological area of the Eternal City. Our first stop will of course be the Colosseum; the largest Amphitheatre ever built under the Roman Empire, and the most celebrated monument to violent entertainment in history with its gruesome fights, beasts and gladiators. We’ll learn the truth from the myths about the games while observing the arena from above, then we’ll walk the pathway along the inner wall to marvel at the technical expertise of the Romans and their building techniques. Simply amazing!
A relaxing stroll up the Palatine Hill is up next, and it’s no wonder Augustus picked this location for his luxurious Imperial Palace – with its green scenery and stunning view of the city, it’s definitely a treat. Walking back down, we’ll enter the Roman Forum, the old city centre where all the important temples and public buildings used to be, including the Roman Senate. This is truly the religious, political and economic hub of ancient Rome, and we’ll unpack the many layers (literally!) of the story of the city through the ages.

A comprehensive exploration of Rome’s archaeological area, from the Colosseum to the Imperial Palace on Palatine Hill, then down through the ruins of the Roman Forum and finally the architectural wonders of the Pantheon.
Our visit of the archaeological area in Rome starts with the Colosseum, the largest Amphitheatre ever built under the Roman Empire, an iconic landmark made famous by the fights and spectacles that took place in this arena. We’ll find out which myths are based in reality and how exactly the Romans managed to come up with such extraordinary building solutions. The gentle slope of the Palatine Hill awaits us next, with the ruins of Augustus’ Imperial Palace and a stunning view of the city. Back on street level and below, we’ll enter the Roman Forum, the heart of all religious and political life in those times. After a short walk through Rome’s narrow alleys, the incredibly well-preserved dome-with-a-hole of the Pantheon will make you stop in your tracks. Does it actually rain inside? We’ll discover all about that and more by taking a look and discussing how this gravity-defying wonder was built. One of Rome’s most famous attractions, the Pantheon has played many roles in history without ever skipping a beat.
This tour is NOT available on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Our tour of the archaeological area in Rome begins with the Colosseum, the largest Amphitheatre ever built under the Roman Empire, an iconic landmark made famous by the fights and spectacles held in this arena. We’ll find out which myths are based in reality and how exactly the Romans managed to come up with such extraordinary building solutions. Just a short walk from the Colosseum and we’ll be at the entrance of the Basilica of Saint Clement, a unique example of Rome’s ‘vertical history’ courtesy of its hardly believable three-tiered structure: a medieval church built on top of an early Christian church, built on top of a Imperial-era Roman building! We’ll be starting at the bottom – the perfect place to be in the summer, with its cool air and underground water stream running around the Basilica – and making our way up through the centuries. It’s just a short break at street level though, before we descend once again into the heart of ancient Roman life at the Forum, with a walk among the ruins of the most important religious and political buildings of the city.

Trastevere & Jewish Ghetto
(5 / 5)
Private Walking Tour | 3h | from €180
Touring the heart of Rome and walking around the quintessentially authentic neighborhoods of Trastevere with its little alleys and the Ghetto, along with city-favorite Campo de’ Fiori fresh market and the Tiber with its island. Continue reading
Duration: | 3 hours |
Includes: | Piazza Campo de’ Fiori – Santa Maria in Trastevere – Isola Tiberina – Teatro di Marcello – Portico d’Ottavia |
Price (1/4 people): | € 180 (prices may vary depending on season) |
You might need: | comfortable shoes and a bottle of water |
It doesn’t get any more Roman than a placid morning stroll around Trastevere, one of the most traditional neighborhoods in the capital. The narrow alleys, the busy bakeries and forni, the old ladies sitting and chatting on theirs chairs outside. We’ll get there after starting our tour in Piazza Farnese and Campo de’ Fiori – home to the famous daily produce market. In Trastevere we’ll visit the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest in town, and the first built in tribute to the Virgin Mary.
Crossing the river we’ll step foot onto the Tiber Island, a sliver of land hosting the ruins of an ancient Roman bridge, Ponte Rotto, as well as a temple dedicated to the god of medicine, Aesculapios (quite appropriately, this tiny island is perhaps best known today for its fully functional hospital founded in 1584). The Ghetto – where Roman Jews were ordered to move by the Pope in 1555 – is our final stop, to see the ruins of the Theater of Marcellus and Porticus Octaviae, but also to explore an area that even today represents a fiercely proud bastion of Jewish culture, and home to some of the finest food traditions in Rome.

Borghese Gallery
(5 / 5)
Private Walking Tour | 2h1/2 | from €180

To grasp the importance of the Borghese Gallery, just picture this scene of early 17th-century Rome: a powerful Pope in charge of the Vatican; his nephew, a ruthless Cardinal with a love for art; a city being mined for its past, with almost daily uncoverings of incredible archaeological treasures; and in the background, two up-and-coming artists named Bernini and Caravaggio.
That’s how the collection in this Gallery came to be – still kept in its original location, and still the same vibrant blend of sublime art, vicious tyranny and murky betrayals. Cardinal Scipione Borghese masterminded the whole operation, going as far as incarcerating artist in order to steal their paintings (as in the case of poor Domenichino, guilty of not wanting to give up his stunning Diana’s Hunt).
Nestled inside Villa Borghese, one of Rome’s biggest parks, the Galleria Borghese includes works by the finest masters of the era – not just Bernini, who worked directly under the Cardinal, but Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian as well.

Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome, is one of the most important archeological sites in the world. Located near the coastal town of Ostia, the south-west seaside escape of choice for many Romans today, the colony counted 75,000 citizens around the 2nd century and served as the closest seaport to Rome in addition to its many attractions. This tour is a deep dive into the Romans’ way of life – the unique chance to walk around the tabernae to take a close look at where they used to sit down and enjoy a glass of wine, to explore their houses and public baths, to visit the local theatre and examine mosaics and frescos.
Similar to Pompeii but much closer to the capital, Ostia Antica is just a short train ride away from the city (30 mins, tickets €1,5 each way). Once the tour is over, you could also elect to partake in another Roman tradition – this time a contemporary one: taking a quick detour to Ostia for a fabulous plate of spaghetti allo scoglio on the beach!

Burdened by his disgust for the chaos of Rome, and an even stronger contempt for the city’s Senate, Roman emperor Hadrian decided to relocate to Tivoli in the 2nd century. Of course, he did so in true imperial fashion, effectively building a brand new mini-Rome on top of this pleasant city north-east of the capital. The ruins of the villa include sculptures, artworks, gardens, steam baths and even a ‘Maritime Theatre’ with a small island in the center, where Hadrian could retire and think.
Following our lunch break we’ll move on to Villa d’Este, home to Cardinal Ippolito d’Este in the 16th century. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to get himself elected Pope, the Cardinal moved to Tivoli, cultivating the myths of his heritage (he claimed to be a descendent of Hercules) and of architectural spectacle – pretty evident today in the well-preserved aqueducts, amazing musical fountains (still working!) and water games he built.
An exciting and surprising experience, this tour combines unique attractions with the natural appeal of an out-of-town break.
Please note that Tivoli is about a 40-minute drive from Rome; as such, the tour requires a car or a driving service to reach the destination.

The oldest museum in the world in the heart of ancient Rome, next to the Campidoglio. From the origins of the city itself to the developments of the Middle Ages, the Capitoline Museums encapsulate the whole history of Rome.
Having started its collection in 1471, when Pope Sisto IV donated items like the iconic Lupa to the city, the Capitoline Museums are truly a representation of Rome itself. Quite appropriately, our tour will start with Michelangelo’s piazza and the famous bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius which timelessly stands in its center (and which, ironically, is only standing because it was mistaken for Constantine in the Middle Ages). In the majestic Palazzo dei Conservatori we’ll find frescos detailing the history of Rome from Romulus and Remus’ mythical inception to Hannibal entering Italy with his elephants to take the fight to the Roman Republic. The museum is located on the Capitoline Hill, forever a crucial place in Roman history, once hosting the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus as well as the current offices of the city’s mayor. We’ll see the ruins of the former and the beautiful view of the latter, which oversees the Roman Forum. We’ll then cross over to Palazzo Nuovo to explore the rest of the collection from the 18th century, with the option of a mid-tour coffee break at Terrazza Caffarelli, one of the most fulfilling panoramic spots in the entire city, stretching from the Pantheon to St Peter’s and from the Gianicolo to the entire city center.
