MIAC ROME ITALY MUSEUM Cinecittà

Movie enthusiasts will be able to fuel their passion when they visit Rome, and not just throughout the festival season! A new museum to document Italy’s impressive contribution to this media, in fact, has just opened in the Cinecittà studios in south Rome.

Dubbed MIAC, Museo Italiano dell’Audiovisivo e del Cinema (Italian Museum of the Audiovisual and Cinema), this is located in what was once home to the Development and Printing Labs of the famed movie sets – with growing digitization, those space were not being used any longer.

An immersive visit

What the MIAC will show the visitors is the journey of Italian cinema, from its origins to such famous currents and genres such as neorealism, spaghetti westerns or peplums: a material and immaterial heritage of visual civilization, more than 120 years in the making.

The Museum doesn’t simply show all of these materials in a chronological order, though.

The facility is comprised of several themed rooms, offering immersive and emotional experiences thanks to interactive installations, video art, transmedial languages, so as to stimulate the visitors’ sensibilities. Some of the themes explored are the maestros of Italian cinema; the Language; the Landscapes – many more will be discovered once you step inside!

News coverage from a local TV should help you understand the scope and size of the whole thing!

A visit to the MIAC will also be the chance to visit the impressive Cinecittà Studios, once the biggest in Europe, and partly used to this day. Visits to temporary exhibitions as well as some of the celebrated sets are possible to this day, thanks to the “Cinecittà si mostra“/Cinecittà Shows Off project.

More information is also available on this site (in English).

The Cinecittà studios complex is very conveniently reachable by subway, getting off at the dedicated stop of Cinecittà, roughly 25 minutes from the city center of Rome.
